Ruling RPP not to participate in Constitution amendment debate

KATHMANDU: The Rastriya Prajatantra Party, a member of the ruling coalition, on Sunday said it would neither file any amendment to, nor vote in favour of the Constitution amendment bill, being discussed at the Parliament currently.

It means the party which has two ministers in the Cabinet would boycott the amendment process as the main opposition CPN-UML has been doing.

The fourth largest party's Parliamentary Party meeting presided over by the party Chairman and PP Leader Kamal Thapa in Kathmandu today made the decision, informed the party's Chief Whip Dilnath Giri in a statement.

The party demanded that the government create an environment of consensus before beginning discussions on the bill, claiming moving forward the bill in the current situation would produce undesirable impacts and spoil the environment for local level elections slated for May 14.

"The bill has failed to satisfy anyone," Giri said, "Therefore, the RPP has been frequently calling to create a new understanding among all parties in the House after withholding the bill as it is."

Meanwhile, the RPP also appealed to the stakeholders to create the environment for polls in which all parties including the Madhes-centric ones could participate.
