Save Dr Govinda KC, NHRC tells govt

KATHMANDU: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) on Friday drew attention of the government on deteriorating health condition of Dr Govinda KC, who is on his eighth fast-unto-death from July 10 demanding reforms in Nepal's medical sector.

The constitutional human rights body urged all the concerned authorities for a serious attention to Dr KC's health conditions after inspecting his protest.

"Notwithstanding the form of protest," the NHRC spokesperson Mohna Ansari said in a statement today, "It is an important responsibility of the concerned parties to manage effective treatment of the person as health is directly related to his life."

The Commission team during the monitoring had communicated with Dr KC, his supporters and the management of the Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital (TUTH).

The NHRC also urged the concerned authorities to honour past agreements made between Dr KC and the government.

Meanwhile, the Nepal Medical Association (NMA) on Friday issued a press release and urged concerned authorities to manage treatment to save Dr KC's life.

Expressing solidarity with most demands of Dr KC, the umbrella organisation of Nepali medical doctors, however, requested him not get involved in the blame game and demand impeachment motion against the Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority Chief Lokman Singh Karki as the demand does not fall under his professional duty.

Dr KC has been staging hunger strike, to pressurise the government for various provisions which he says would reform the medical education sector in the country.
