513 conflict-era cases filed with Kavre peace committee

Kavre, July 24

As many as 513 cases of those killed and disappeared during the ten-year Maoist insurgency have been registered at the Local Peace Committee, Kavre.

The cases were filed demanding investigation of the perpetrators of serious human rights violation.

The peace committee had started registering the cases after the Commission for the Enforce Disappeared Persons, and the Peace and Reconciliation Commission issued directives to the committee four months ago.

According to the committee, of the total cases, 469 are related to peace and reconciliation.

Similarly, 40 victim families have registered their cases saying that their kin disappeared at the CIEDP.

Peace Committee Coordinator Tulku Lama said that of the total cases, 32 held unknown groups guilty, while seven held the state guilty. “No case has been filed implicating the rebels,” Lama said.

Data with Kavre DAO shows that 262 families of people deceased in the conflict, 80 families of injured and physically disabled, 60 of displaced, and 32 of disappeared persons received government reparations and relief.

Five serious human rights violation cases registered with Kavre Police have been gathering dust without investigation. It is reported that preparations are on to take three of these cases to the UNHRC under the United Nations.

The cases of Suvadra Chaulagain,17, who was shot to death by security forces, Hari Bolkhela, 35, who was killed by security forces, and Arjun Bahadur Lama, 47, who was murdered by the then CPN-Maoist rebels, are to be taken to the UNHCR.

Maoist leaders Agni Sapkota and Suryaman Dong were allegedly involved in Lama’s killing.

Kavre District Court has revived Maina Sunwar’s case, in which four Nepal Army personnel who were allegedly involved in her murder did not appear before the court.
