Casualties on police side in clashes with Tharuhat supporters in Kailali, Regional Police Office claims "less than media reported"

DHANGADHI: Amid conflicting reports about the number of casualties, the Far-Western Regional Police Office (FWRPO) claimed on Monday evening that only eight persons --  seven security personnel and a two-year-old son of one of the personnel-- were killed in Tikapur of Kailali district after violent clashes broke out between the security personnel and supporters of Tharuhat movement.  

Earlier, it was reported that at least 20 people, including 17 police personnel and three protestors, lost their lives at the incident in Silam Chauraha of Munuwa VDC of Kailai.

17 police personnel, 3 protestors confirmed dead in Kailali clash

KATHMANDU: At least 17 police personnel and three protestors were killed in Kailali as hundreds of Tharuhat supporters defied the prohibitory order and clashed with security personnel on Monday, according to the sources at Ministry of Home Affairs.

Among the security personnel who lost their lives, 11 are from the Nepal Police and six from the Armed Police Force.

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Home Minister, however, told the House that five Nepal Police personnel and some Armed Police Force personnel were fatally attacked by the protestors.

He said that Head Constable Ram Bihari Chaudhary was burned alive, while SSP Laxman Neupane was fatally impaled with spear and two Inspectors -- Balaram Bista and Keshav Bohora -- and Constable Lokendra Chand were hacked to death using sharp weapons.

The number of casualties on the side of protestor is not clear yet.

Kailali Clashes: Police confirm nine casualties on their side, protestors also killed but number unknown

DHANGADHI: Nepal Police confirmed that at least nine personnel, including senior officials, were killed as the cadres and supporters of Tharuhat movement clashed with them in Kailali on Monday.

Some protestors were also killed. But the number of casualties on their side is yet to be confirmed.

A violent clash broke out at Silam Chauraha of Munuwa VDC when hundreds of protestors, wielding axes, knives, spears,catapults and other weapons breached the prohibitory order and attacked security personnel.

Six of the deceased are identified as SSP Laxman Neupane, Inspector Balaram Bista, Inspector Kesahv Bohora, Head Constable Ram Bihari Chaudhary, Head Constable Lalit Saud and Constable Lokendra Chand, according to police sources. Names of three others, including SSP Neupane's bodyguard are yet to be known.

The District Administration Office, however, did not want to confirm the number of casualties.

It has been been reported that the protestors attacked the police personnel with traditional weapons and burned the officials alive.

According to DSP Bishwa Raj Khadka, at least 30 security personnel who were injured in the incident were taken to the Tikapur Hospital.

At least 4 police including SSP killed in clashes with Tharuhat protestors, some “burned alive”

DHANGADHI: Police confirmed that SSP Laxman Neupane, Inspector Balram Bista, Inspector Keshav Bohora and SSP Neupane's body guard were killed in the clashes with protestors in Kailai of western Nepal.

DSP Bishwa Khadka said that he has received information of other casualties on the police side. According to him, the District Police Office is collecting the reports from different place.

Khadka added that the cadres and supporters of Tharuhat movement used home-made weapons to attack police personnel.

Some security personnel were burned alive, according to him.

Casualties reported on police side in clashes with Tharuhat protestors

DHANGADHI/KATHMANDU: It has been reported that some security personnel have been killed as the supporters of Tharuhat movement clashed with them in Kailali district on Monday.

Demanding a separate Tharuhat province, the Tharuhat cadres and supporters defied prohibitory order in Tikapur and other places of the district today and resorted to violent demonstration.

Chief District Officer Raj Kumar Shrestha said the protesters brandished khukuris, swords and catapults and attacked police personnel.

According to a police source, at least five police personnel, including a senior official, were killed. But the information is yet to be independently verified.

It is not clear whether there were casualties on the protesting side.

Dozens of security personnel and protestors have been injured in sporadic clashes.

Tharus from rural areas of Banke, Bardiya and Kailali district have come to Tikapur for demonstration.

Following fatal clashes, an indefinite curfew has been imposed in the district.
