CPN-UML not to field candidate in PM election
KATHMANDU: Outgoing Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli's party CPN-UML on Tuesday decided not to field any candidate in the prime ministerial election.
A meeting of CPN-UML, second largest party in the Parliament, took decision to this effect.
The party, however, will cast vote against CPN Maoist Centre Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal, who is candidate of the Nepali Congress-Maoist alliance, in the prime ministerial election scheduled for tomorrow.
According to CPN-UML Secretary Yogesh Bhattarai, today's meeting decided that the party would stay in the opposition responsibly.
With Nepali Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba as proposer and Madhesi leaders as supporters, CPN Maoist Centre Pushpa Kamal Dahal has already filed his nomination for the prime ministerial election.
After striking a three-point agreement with Nepali Congress and CPN Maoist Centre, the alliance of Madhesi parties extended its support to Dahal.
Madhesi leaders, including Upendra Yadav, Sarvendra Nath Shukla and Laxman Lal Karna, are among the seconders in the nomination proposal for Dahal's candidacy.
The three-point agreement says the new government would implement the Federal Allaince's demands including the amendment of Constitution.
The Parliament is scheduled to choose the new Prime Minister tomorrow through voting after the parties could not find a consensual candidate to lead the new government.
Earlier the CPN-UML had mulled pitching the deputy leader of its Parliamentary Party and former Speaker, Subas Chandra Nembang, against Dahal.
