1 killed, dozens injured in tense Birgunj as police open fire on, baton-charge protesters

BIRGUNJ: After police attempts to reopen the blocked mobility across the Indo-Nepal border checkpoint in Birgunj of Parsa failed, security personnel and protesters clashed in various places of the town.

A protester was killed as police opened fire to control the protests at Shankaracharya Gate.

The victim is identified as Ashish Kumar Ram (25), an Indian citizen, who was currently residing in Birgunj Sub-Metropolitan City-11.

Police claimed he died while undergoing treatment at the Narayani Sub-Regional Hospital.

During the clashes, police opened fire to disperse the mob near Ghantaghar, injuring seven including a minor.

The injured are undergoing treatment at the Narayani Sub-Regional Hospital.

One of the injured, Shivari Sah Sonar, is said to be critical.

In another place in the town, more than two dozen protesters sustained minor injuries after police baton-charged them.

The law enforcement personnel were forced to use many shells of tear gas to control the situation.

Sporadic clashes have been reported from other parts of the district as well.
