BANIYANI, JHAPA: The Nepal Academy of Science and Technology (NAST) has produced fuel from waste plastic on Tuesday in Surunga of Kankari Municipality in Jhapa district.

NAST produced fuel from waste plastic using a maching called Pyrolysis.

According to NAST Engineer Dr Rabindra Prasad Dhakal, around 600 to 700 mililitres of petroleum product can be produced by processing a kilogramme of plastic. The product can then be used to generate diesel, petrol and kerosene.

He also mentioned that non-recyclable plastic should be used to produce petroleum products, and prior to this, NAST has already demonstrated the technology in 35 municipalities across the country. This very technology has currently been used in 65 countries around the world.

NAST estimated that more than 21,000 litres of fuel could be produced from the plastic waste on daily basis in Jhapa district.

It would take between four to five million rupees to install the technology at the local level.
