MJF-D begins 1st convention with vow to rise

KATHMANDU: The first national convention of the Madhesi Janaadhikar Forum-Democratic, led by Bijay Kumar Gachhadar, began in Biratnagar of Morang on Monday.

It has been learned that the party would change its name from this convention to include sentiments of people of all regions, not only the Madhesis.

Gachhadar in his address today also hinted at the change and expressed a commitment to establish his party as one of the biggest political forces in next three years.

The party established by around six years ago is holding the convention for the first time to elect its leadership from among the cadres.

Speaking at the inauguration, party Chairman and Deputy Prime Minister Gachhadar highlighted the role of his party in the Constitution making process.

Gachhadar claimed that if his party had not agreed to sign the 16-point agreement, the Constitution drafting would not have been possible.

Speaking at the same function, UCPN-Maoist Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal also appreciated Gachhadar's role in conclusion of the peace process.

He gave Gachhadar the name of 'three-in-one' as he represents the Madhes region, the Tharu community, and the democratic school of thought.

In response, Gachhadar also said his party was for promulgation of the Constitution at the earliest though it had exceptions on various contents of the Constitution.

Meanwhile, Gachhadar proposed that the Constitution be amended in order to address concerns of agitating Madhes-based parties.

He suggested that the nation be divided into eight provinces in the new federal structure.

CPN-UML senior leader Madhav Kumar Nepal, Nepali Congress leader Prakash Man Singh among other leaders of national political parties had also attended the inaugural.

Likewise, some Indian leaders were also present at the function.
