General strike hits Jajarkot denizens hard

Jajarkot, August 19

Life in Jajarkot has been paralysed owing to the agitation that is raging on there for the past 10 days seeking intact mid-west province and Surkhet as provincial capital.

While marketplaces and educational institutions remained shut affecting daily classes of around 85,000 students across the district, vehicular movement has also been obstructed.

Almost all offices based in the district, government and non-government alike, have remained closed for days.

The strike has further resulted in shortage of daily essentials not only in the hinterlands but also in the district headquarters.

Regarding loss in the business sector, Chamber of Commerce and Industry Jajarkot chapter Chairperson Kamansingh Khadka estimated loss of around Rs 15 million due to the strike over the days.

“It’s a known fact that hoteliers and businessmen are at the receiving end of the strike,” said Khadka, who, however, expressed solidarity of the business fraternity with the agitation.

CDO Bishnu Narayan Shrestha rued the impact of the strike on children.

“Whatever is the case, whatever the objectives, it’s wrong to deprive kids of education by organising strikes,” argued Shrestha.
