Landslides cut off Taplejung village, contact lost

TAPLEJUNG/KATHMANDU: A remote village in Sotli of Tapethok-8 in Taplejung district has been cut off from communication as incessant rainfall triggered huge landslides, isolating it from other places.

Situation of six families living in the village is still unknown.

The settlement has been cut off from other places after land masses started slipping from two sides since Saturday morning, Gyalbu Sherpa of neighbouring Lelep VDC told Rastriya Samachar Samiti over telephone.

According to Sherpa, there was no way to reach the area and it was unlikely that the locals trapped in Sotli could easily go outside.

Landslides have affected bridges that connect Lelep with Sotli and Ghunsa.

A team of security personnel was sent to the incident site yesterday itself, but it could not reach there and returned from midway.

The District Police Office has informed that another team has been dispatched to the area today; but that too is yet to establish any contact with them.

Further information regarding the situation of the people trapped there will be known only after the team would come into contact, DSP Ram Bahadur KC added.

Similarly, District Disaster Management Committee Coordinator and Chief District Officer Chakrapani Pandey stated that they are waiting to establish contact with the police team to assess the situation.
