Life in Birgunj returning to normal as demonstrations subside

Birgunj, September 12

Life in Birgunj has returned to normalcy as no demonstrations have taken place in the city for the last few days.

The situation in Birgunj had turned violent after five protesters were killed in the clash with the police on August 31 and September 1.

Following the incident the local administration had imposed curfew order and declared Birgunj a riot-hit area.

No demonstrations have taken place lately. But, it is said that the protesters have centered their protest programmes in the village areas.

It has also been revealed that some of the local protesters have been pleading to the local leaders of India to support them in their protests. Meanwhile, the local administration has cut curfew hours.

The local administration has been imposing curfew from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm and 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm since some days.

People move around the city after the curfew is lifted. But, market areas of the city wear a deserted look during curfew hours.

Earlier, an indefinite curfew in the city had made the lives of locals difficult. The locals had started facing shortage of daily necessities, including cooking gas, food items and vegetables. The administration has decided to reduce curfew hours after protest activities in the city subsided.

Meanwhile, businesspersons and locals continue to live in fear due to indefinite closure called by various protesting groups in Tarai disrticts. Factories and educational institutions have yet to reopen in the district.
