Major parties ready to amend constitution

Kathmandu, November 23

Major parties today agreed to table the constitution amendment proposal in the Parliament after taking the consent of agitating Madhes-based parties.

However, the parties are yet to forge a common stance on the demands of the agitating parties.

Vice-Chairman of Unified CPN-Maoist Narayan Kaji Shrestha said today’s meeting decided to address the 11-point demand of the agitating parties through a joint meeting of major parties following separate meetings of ruling and opposition parties with agitating parties before Thursday’s Parliament meeting.

Shrestha appealed to the agitating parties to make their agitation peaceful and get their concerns resolved through dialogue.“Parties will have a common stance on the demands of the agitating parties before the next Parliament meeting,” said Prime Minister Oli’s Press Adviser Pramod Dahal.

He said the agitating United Democratic Madhesi Front had rejected the constitution amendment proposal of the Nepali Congress and therefore the proposal should first be changed through consensus among the major parties and the agitating front.

Dahal said NC and the ruling coalition would hold separate talks with the agitating parties and then sit together to arrive at a common stance on their demands.

Asked why the parties were delaying to resolve the crisis, Shrestha claimed that it was because NC and UML had not comprehended the issues of inclusion and federalism and the gravity and dimensions of the ongoing internal political crisis.

He said of late NC had made some positive moves about solving the escalating problem but UML was still hesitant.

He claimed UCPN-M was close to Madhes-based parties in terms of agenda but due to the reluctance of UML and NC talks had been delayed and the movement in the Tarai had turned violent.
