Neelgai, wild boars destroy crops

Siraha, August 17

Farmers in the northern belt of Siraha district have complained of loss of crops due to wild boars and neelgai.

“I’d cultivated maize in around five kathha land this year, but wild boars and neelgai have destroyed most of it. My worst fear is that they will eat up all the crops by harvest time,” said MaheshworShrestha of Dabar in Dhangadhimai Municipality-13.

Prem Kumar Lama of Golbazaar Municipality-2, has cultivated maize in 12 kattha land. He also complained that wild boars have been damaging his crops. “I had to bear a huge loss last year. I didn’t have a good harvest

as wild animals from nearby forest ate my crops. I fear the same this year too,” he said.

Another farmer, Rabindra Thapa complained that he had almost lost the means of his daily income as neelgai and boars have been destroying his vegetable field.

“I earn my living by selling pointed gourds. But, I am facing a hard time saving vegetables as wild boars and neelgai eat them and also damage the plants,” he said.

According to Lama, farmers affected by wild animals had requested Golbazaar Municipality to find a solution to their problem. “The municipality should either allow us to kill the animals that have made our life difficult or do something to control them,” he said. However, the municipality has done nothing to address their problem, said farmers.
