Nepali Congress still divided over impeaching Karki

KATHMANDU: The largest political party Nepali Congress has apparently been divided on whether to support the impeachment motion against the Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority Chief Lok Man Singh Karki.

While all eyes are on the ruling party, the NC has not been able to make any decision about the issue even on the second day of its Central Working Committee meeting today.

The Parliament is scheduled to begin discussions on the issue on Sunday. But, the largest party has postponed the meeting till Monday morning.

Some influential leaders including General Secretary Shashanka Koirala and CWC member Shekhar Koirala have expressed views that the impeachment motion could be a ploy against their party as it was not consulted before filing the motion.

"There are questions like if it is not a bid to form the leftist government," Shekhar told reporters after the meeting, "Who knows what the Maoists are doing?"

"It is purely an alliance of the UML and the Maoists," he added.

Likewise, leader NP Saud told the BBC Nepali Service that it could be an attempt to split the current NC-Maoists alliance and form the new one.

Other leaders of the party including Health Minister Gagan Thapa, Dhana Raj Gurung and Pradeep Paudel, however, are lobbying the party to decide for the motion, and against Karki.

Thapa on Thursday had opined that the impeachment motion could be an opportunity to correct the past mistakes and hence the party should stand firm against Karki.

Many leaders were for settling the issue in consensus as going for or against the motion could lead into unnecessary polarisation, according to the Rastriya Samachar Samiti.

Leaders had also told the party leadership to consult the CPN-UML and the CPN Maoist Centre, which moved the impeachment motion, before deciding its opinion.

CWC members Prakash Man Singh, Gyanendra Bahadur Karki, Farmullah Mansur, Man Bahadur Bishwakarma, Dilendra Prasad Badu, NP Saud, Shekhar Koirala, Ananda Prasad Dhungana, Nabindra Raj Joshi, Kamala Panta, Ratna Sherchan, Jeevan Pariyar, Pradeep Paudel, Mohan Bahadur Basnet, Devendra Raj Kandel, Ramesh Lekhak and Kiran Yadav had put forth their views in the meeting today, according to the party central office's chief secretary Krishna Prasad Paudel.
