Nepali diaspora in US protests blockade

Kathmandu, November 18

Nepalis living in the United States yesterday protested against the blockade unofficially imposed by India against Nepal in front of the United Nations headquarters in New York.

The protest was organised at the initiative of Non-Resident Nepali Association, National Coordination Council, USA.

The Council has also given a memorandum to UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, drawing his attention to the humanitarian crisis Nepal is facing in the absence of fuel, medicine and other essentials due to the protracted blockade.

“Nepalese diaspora around the globe and citizens of Nepal are deeply concerned about the current humanitarian crisis in Nepal resulting from the continued transit blockade of essential commodities and supplies,” read the memorandum submitted to the UN Secretary General.

A copy of the memorandum has also given to India’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Asoke Kumar Mukerji and

Nepal’s Permanent Representative to the UN Durga Prasad Bhattarai.

Keshab Paudel, President of NRN-USA said Nepalis living across the USA gathered in New York to make the world community aware about the humanitarian crisis faced by Nepali people due to India’s deliberate trade embargo against a landlocked Nepal.

Last week, Nepali diaspora residing in the United Kingdom had staged a similar protest in London, where Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi was on a three-day official visit.
