Police escorted vehicles, curfew time increased in Saptari for security

LAHAN: Police escorted vehicles stranded in different parts of the East-West Highway eyeing security concerns after the violent clash between agitating Madhesi Morcha cadres and police in Saptari on Saturday evening.

The vehicles coming from different parts of the country have been stranded in Bardibas and Lalgadh of Mahottari following the death of two demonstrators in the scuffle that took place at Rupani and Bhardaha of Saptari since Saturday evening.

The security personnel escorted more than 500 vehicles coming from eastern part of the country and over 400 vehicles en route to east to their destinations last night due to security threats from demonstrators, said Deputy Superintendant of Police (DSP) Uma Prasad Chaturbedi.

However, the demonstrators did not ceased their efforts to vandalise the vehicles escorted by police on the road.

Meanwhile, the Siraha District Administration has extended the time of curfew, by two hours, imposed in either side of the road sections along the East-West Highway in the evening. With this, the curfew time has reached 12 hours a day.

The local administration increased the curfew time after the irate cadres of the United Democratic Madhesi Front opted to obstruct the vehicles on the roads along the highway even in the night time.

Chief District Officer of Siraha Dr Man Bahadur Biswokarma said that the curfew time has been extended which now is effective from 7.00 pm in the evening to 7:00 am in the morning to maintain law and order in view of growing anarchic activities along the highway.
