Political parties pledge to ensure communal harmony during stir

Just after the brutal killings in Kailali, different political parties in Chitwan district today pledged not to disturb communal harmony among people.

Chiefs and representatives of political parties, Nepal Federation of Indigenous Nationalities and Tharu Welfare Assembly, among others have committed to protest peacefully without disturbing the harmony among Nepalis.

At a multi-party meeting organised by Chief District Officer Binod Prakash Singh at DAO today, all the chiefs and representatives decided to organise their protest programmes in coordination with the local administration. It was also decided that police would not intervene in peaceful protests.

President of Tharu Welfare Assembly Bishram Mahata said his organisation’s protest programmes would be peaceful. He pledged not to disturb communal harmony in the district. Likewise, Chairman Padam Gurung of Nepal Federation of Indigenous Nationalities said that peaceful protests would be launched to get their demands fulfilled. “The local administration has to play a key role in maintaining restraint,” he stressed.

At the meeting, Nepali Congress Chitwan President Tek Prasad Gurung, CPN-UML district Chairman Jagannath Thapaliya, Unified CPN-Maoist leader Ghanashyam Dahal and Rastriya Prajatrantra Party-Nepal district Chair Badri Timilsina said strikes and other protest programmes would be organised peacefully. They urged other unions and organisations to be committed to the same in the course of their protests.

CDO Singh urged all bandh organisers to maintain restraint and avoid unwanted activities in the name of peaceful protest.

Chiefs of the security department, human rights activists and journalists, among others, were present at the meeting.
