Prison, detention centres of Chitwan in sorry state
Chitwan, August 4
District Prison and the detention centre are in dilapidated condition.
Monitoring conducted by the Office of the Attorney General on August 2, found the infrastructure to be in a sorry state.
The lounge needed to be improved and the daily allowance of the jailbirds was found to be insufficient.
Besides, the detention centre and the prison were not in good condition, said Joint Attorney Chandra Bahadur Sapkota.
“Questions of human rights and congestion in the prison and detention centre were raised very strongly during monitoring,” said Sapkota.
Talking to mediapersons today, Sapkota said that the state required to be serious about properly managing gaol and detention.
Office of the Attorney General had formed nine monitoring teams to observe prisons across the country. The team had monitored district police office, area police offices, district forest office, district prison, Chitwan National Park and detention centres of the district. The monitoring teams will submit their reports to the Office of the Attorney General by mid-August.
