Shashanka terms Madhes citadel of democracy

Kathmandu, March 9

Newly elected Nepali Congress General Secretary Shashanka Koirala reaffirmed that his party was committed to resolve the issues raised by Madhesi leaders through consensus, collaboration and mutual trust.

In a press statement he issued today, Koirala admitted that there was discontent in the Madhes, the citadel of democracy, but the differences could be ironed out through collaboration, mutual understanding, coordination and mutual trust.

“What are inevitable today are social justice based on nationality, democracy and democratic socialism. It is our responsibility to build trust, forge national unity, mutual understanding and foster collaboration, coordination and social harmony on the foundation of social justice,” the press statement reads.

Noting that the youthful enthusiasm, spirit and dynamism had been the source of inspiration for the party, Koirala admitted that a huge responsibility had befallen on the shoulders of NC leaders with election of the new leadership.

The statement also says the NC has a role to play in poverty alleviation, eradication of illiteracy and resolving the unemployment problem and in keeping unity in diversity and ensuring social harmony among the marginalised communities.

Koirala, in the statement, remembered late Congress leaders BP Koirala, Ganesh Man Singh, Subarna Shumsher Rana, Krishna Prasad Bhattarai, Girija Prasad Koirala, Ram Narayan Mishra, Mahendra Narayan Nidhi, Radha Krishna Tharu and Sushil Koirala, who contributed for the sake of democracy in the country and expressed commitment to follow their path in the days ahead.

He also thanked the representatives of the recently concluded NC’s 13th National General Convention, observers, leaders, and cadres.
