Stranded vehicles leave Birgunj

Birgunj, November 5

Almost two months after they were stranded, as many as 126 cargo-laden vehicles and containers have left for their destinations from the Birgunj-based dry port on Wednesday night.

Earlier, though the authorities had planned to reroute stranded vehicles, the ongoing demonstrations by Madhes-based parties had made this difficult.

Therefore, the authorities on Wednesday took advantage of the curfew imposed since Monday and sent 101 cargo trucks and 25 containers to their destinations.

According to Harihar Poudel, an official at the dry port customs office, the trucks that have left Birgunj for their destinations are carrying chemical fertilizer, fabric, furniture items, among other things. As per sources, around 150 metric tonnes of goods have been stranded in the dry port.

Still around 900 containers are stranded in the dry port. The curfew in Birgunj, however, is being loosened as today the authorities lifted it for 11 hours from 7:00 am to 8:00 pm.

The agitating parties, on the other hand, gave continuity to their sit-in at Miteri Bridge for the 43rd day today.

Meanwhile, local youths of Raxaul burnt effigy of Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli today in Raxaul bazaar.

They chanted slogans against China and the government and demanded that the Indian national killed in police firing be declared a martyr.

They also expressed solidarity with the ongoing Madhesh agitation and called the Indian government to impose a complete trade embargo on Nepal.
