Strike called on day of statute promulgation

Kathmandu, August 4

Madhesi front, Janajati parties and Mohan Baidhya-led 33-party National Front today unveiled a protest plan demanding annulment of the ‘regressive’ draft constitution.

A meeting of the United Democratic Madhesi Front led by Upendra Yadav, five Janajati-based parties and Baidhya-led front declared a general strike on August 16 — the day scheduled for promulgation of the new constitution.

Major parties have been claiming that they will promulgate the new constitution within the month of Shrawan of the Nepali calendar.

CPN-Maoist secretary Dev Gurung said five Janajati-based parties including Social Democratic Party, Tharuhat Tarai Party, Federal Limbuwan Party, Aadibasi Janajati Party, and Rastriya Janamukti Party and four parties of UDMF — Federal Socialist Forum, Tarai Madhes Democratic Party, Sadbhawana Party and Tarai Madhes Sadbhawana Party have joined hands with CPN-M-led 33-party front to fight against the ‘regressive’ constitution.

He said the alliance has declared torch rallies in different parts of the country on August 15.

Joint general secretary of TMDP Jitendra Sonal said corner meetings would be organised from August 7 to 9 throughout the nation. He said the alliance would fight against the draft constitution — the product of the 16-point agreement between the NC, UML, UCPN-M and MJF-Democratic which violates the Interim Constitution.

Gurung said on August 11, the alliance would organise demonstrations in all the district headquarters of the country.
