Supreme court stays decision to add local units

KATHMANDU: The Supreme court on Friday has issued an interim order in the name of the government not to implement its decision to increase the number of local units in the Terai region.

A division bench of Justice, Sapana Malla Pradhan and Ishwar Prasad Khatiwada decided to stay the decision in accordance with Article 295 of the constitution.

As per the sub-article 3 of Article 295 of the constitution, the government could form a commission for the determination of the number and boundaries of Village units, Municipalities and Special, Protected or Autonomous Regions.

The government had decided to increase 22 local units in the Terai region to appease the disgruntled Madhesi parties in a bid to take them on board for the second phase of local level elections on June 14.

Advocates Shambhu Thapa, Tikaram Bhattarai and Ramesh Badal among others had advocated against the decision during the hearing today.

Earlier, Dhan Bahadur Shrestha had filed a petition against the decision at the Apex court.
