Three-decade long wait for disappeared son

The whereabouts of Saketchandra Mishra of Tilathi VDC in Saptari remains unknown for the past 30 years.

The kin of Mishra, who had been disappeared by the security agencies then, are still unaware if he is dead or alive.

His mother Chapaladevi, 88, is in mourning ever since he disappeared. Mishra was just 19-years-old when he was disappeared. “There is no peace in my mind and soul.

Now I am old and may die anytime soon, but I wish see my son before I die,” said Chapaladevi with tears rolling down her cheeks.

Mishra was arrested by then autocratic Panchayati regime on the charge of his involvement in bomb explosion in front of Hotel Annapurna in 1985.

He had been accused of working for then Ram Raja Prasad-led Janabadi Morcha.

Though Mishra’s kin searched for him in police offices and prisons across the country, they failed to find him. “The state remained mum about the whereabouts of our son,” she said.

Her husband Ram Chandra died three years ago. “I think I too will die before I get to see him again,” she lamented.

“As no government formed after the end of Panchayati system helped us find our son, we offered his last rituals in Gaya of India 12-years after he disappeared.

However, we still have a hope that he will return alive,” said his brother Sumesh Chandra.

He lamented that his innocent brother became the victim of forced disappearance . “The state must give a clear answer about whether he is alive or not,” he demanded.
