UCPN-Maoist lawmakers criticise party leadership

KATHMANDU: Unified CPN-Maoist Chair Pushpa Kamal Dahal on Friday clarified the party’s Constituent Assembly members that his party was forced to compromise on the issues of the new constitution to safeguard the past achievements.

Responding to CA members’ concern at the meeting of the parliamentary party here on Friday , Dahal said the party was forced to compromise on new statute since they didn’t want to risk losing the past achievements.

CA members of the party had criticised party’s leadership for forging agreement with coalition partners by excluding the previously agreed agendas.

They stressed that the party should have taken the constitution drafting process as per the past agreements and peace accord. “Even the issues agreed upon during the previous CA could not be incorporated,” party’s whip Rekha Sharma quoted some CA members as saying.

They also criticised the recent 16-point agreement signed by four major parties, including the main opposition party.

According to Sharma, Chairman Dahal ensured the party’s CA members that the party had compromised with an intention to prepare for the next struggle by institutionalising all the past achievements and therefore leaders should not take it as agreement without considering the achievements.

She added that today’s meeting also discussed the forthcoming budget of the new fiscal year, along with the government’s policy and programme, besides constitution drafting process.

Dahal said that his party had urged the government to bring its policy, programmes and budget through consensus by forming a separate committee, including members of different parties.

Dahal, along with Vice-chairman and head of the party’s constitution as well as legislative parliament Narayan Kaji Shrestha, and party’s chief whip Girirajmani Pokharel addressed the meeting. The leaders briefed about the party’s strategy in constitution drafting process.

Another CA member Ram Karki said the CA members had expressed discontent over the party’s leadership for failing to incorporate many of their agendas.
