UDMF to continue protests, talks inconclusive today again
KATHMANDU: The protesting United Democratic Madhesi Front (UDMF) on Sunday decided to continue their protests including obstructions at Indo-Nepal border points and highways.
After its two-day meeting in Janakpurdham of Dhanusha district, the Front made the decision to this effect.
It has even warned of making the protests more intense and participatory.
The meeting also dubbed the on-going talks with the government just a drama, claiming the government was not serious about demands of the Front.
The government should be more sensitive for meaningful and result-oriented talks, according to the Front.
Talks inconclusive again
Meanwhile, the talks between the Front and the government team ended inconclusively today as well.
According to Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs Kamal Thapa, who heads the government talks team, the government side today proposed the agitators to seek a solution through constitutional procedures after forging political consensus on the issue of demarcation of federal units.
The Front had put forth 11 points of demands regarding various provisions of the Constitution, during the meeting.
A press statement issued by the Front after the meeting said the government was ready to meet some of its demands including status of martyrs to those killed in Tarai protests and compensations to their families, withdrawal of cases charged against UDMF cadres and leaders and free treatment of those injured in the protests.
The two parties now have agreed to sit for dialogues against after "serious homework."
Earlier, the UDMF leaders had warned of walking away of the negotiation table if the talks did not produce concrete results on Sunday.
The UDMF, however, has not made any decision about leaving the talks table.
The meeting was held at the Federal Socialist Forum-Nepal office in Tinkune of Kathmandu.
The date for next round of talks has not been fixed.
