KATHMANDU, FEBRUARY 24

Co-chairs of the Dahal-Nepal faction of Nepal Communist Party (NCP) have met with Nepali Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba, today.

Pushpa Kamal Dahal and Madhav Kumar Nepal of the NCP splinter group met NC President Deuba at his private residence in Budhanilakantha on Wednesday afternoon.

Earlier today, the two leaders had returned to Kathmandu from Chitwan where they had gone to attend a mass gathering. However, they returned before addressing the public there after the Supreme Court overturned Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli-led government's move to dissolve the House of Representatives.

On Tuesday, the apex court gave the verdict on the House dissolution case. The SC deemed Prime Minister Oli's step of dissolving the House an unconstitutional act, thereby repealing the decision.

As an after-effect of the Court's verdict in favour of House reinstatement, many such meetings among leaders of various political parties can now be expected. As a natural course of action, a new government will have to be formed following SC's verdict, unless the Prime Minister retains majority in the parliament as he is ready to face the House.

According to the Prime Minister's press advisor, the PM will face the House of Representatives to implement the verdict but will not tender his resignation, as of now.

To form a new government, keeping in mind the present scenario, no single party can comfortably garner a majority, unilaterally. Backing of the main opposition Nepali Congress appears vital to either sides. Therefore, today's meeting between NC President Deuba and NCP faction leaders Dahal and Nepal will be viewed through an analytical lens.
