Nepal sees a drop in Covid-19 cases on Saturday, number of tests carried out comparatively lower

4,311 infections, 116 deaths, 6080 recoveries reported

KATHMANDU, MAY 29

Nepal saw a drop in daily reported cases of Covid-19 as 4,311 new infections surfaced in the past 24-hours. This is the lowest figure recorded in Nepal since the advent of the second wave of the pandemic wherein cases lower than today, 3442 infections, were last logged on April 26.

The single daily cases rose as high as 9317 on May 11 and remained around 8-9000 for a significant amount of time. However, a gradual decline in cases is being observed since May 26 where 6677 cases had surfaces as against the 8387 cases reported on May 25.

It is, however, to be noted that the number of PCR tests carried out in the last 24 hours, 14,752, were relatively lesser compared to the past few days.

Nepal has till now recorded a total of 553,422 Covid cases and 7,163 deaths since the initial outbreak in the early months of 2020. As many as 116 fatalities were reported on Saturday.

Around 6,080 patients recovered in the last 24 hours taking the total number of recoveries to 434,750. With fresh recoveries slightly more than the new infections of late, the active Covid-19 case count currently stands at 111,509.

Meanwhile, antigen tests confirmed 176 positive cases in the past 24 hours. As such, total infections from both the RT-PCR and antigen tests added up to 4,487 today.

There are 891 individuals in various quarantine facilities across Nepal. So far, 78.6 per cent of COVID patients have recovered in Nepal.

In the same time frame , 867 infections were reported in the capital city on Saturday while Lalitpur and Bhaktapur reported 199 and 105 cases respectively.

According to the health ministry, 14,752 total tests were conducted in the last 24 hours, of which 14,006 were PCR tests while 746 were antigen tests. With this, a total of 3,031,383 PCR tests have been carried out in Nepal till date.

On Friday, Nepal's coronavirus case count reached 549,111 with 6,855 newly confirmed cases.

Globally, over 170 million people have been infected by the novel coronavirus while 3.5 million people have lost their lives to the disease. Likewise, over 151 million people have recovered while more than 14 million cases are still active.
