KATHMANDU, JUNE 11
Police on Friday arrested civil society activists from Baluwatar who were protesting government's intervention into the operation of Medical Education Commission.
Narayan Wagle, Archana Thapa, Yug Pathak, Khagendra Sangraula, Sanjeev Upreti, and over a dozen other Brihat Nagarik Andolan (Mass Civic Movement) activists were detained from around Baluwatar.
The group had issued a statement on Thursday warning the government not to make the medical sector a political tool while also appealing the public to join them in protesting the same.
The demonstrators had gathered in Baluwatar to call out unwarranted political interference with Medical Education Commission, commercialisation of health sector and providing affiliation to B&C Medical College without meeting legal criteria based on political proximity, among other related issues.
The detainees have been taken to Nepal Police Club in Bhrikutimandap.
Meanwhile, medical activist, health sector reformer and senior orthopedic surgeon Dr Govinda KC too has warned the government to stay ready to face yet another Satyagraha if it continues to haphazardly move towards the direction of 'mafiaisation' of health sector.
