A renowned climber from Jordan scaled Mera Peak in Nepal paying tribute to an Al Jazeera's journalist who was shot dead amid gunfire between Israeli and Palestine forces in Palestine.

Mostafa Salameh, who completed the Explorers Grand Slam, carried a big portrait of slain Palestinian journalist Shireen Abu Akleh to the top of Mera Peak on May 30 paying tribute to the 51-year-old journalist.

Abu Akleh, a Palestinian American reporter, was killed while she was on assignment in Jenin in the occupied West Bank on May 11.

'I decided to dedicate my climb on Mera Peak to Al Jazeera's journalist Abu Akleh,' Mostafa, the first Jordanian to climb Mt Everest, said after arriving in Kathmandu.

From the top of Mera peak, he remembered the veteran journalist Abu Akleh and called for an independent investigation into her killing, Mostafa said.

In 2008, Mostafa was awarded the Independence Medal by King Abdullah II of Jordan for his ascent of Mt Everest. 'I am also planning for an all-women Everest expedition from Jordan,' the author of 'Dreams of a Refugee: From the Middle East to Mount Everest', said.

Mustafa, who was born to Palestinian parents in Kuwait and grew up in a refugee camp, has also become the first Jordanian to complete the 'Explorers Grand Slam', by climbing the Seven Summits, and reaching the North and South poles. Only 16 people have ever achieved the Grand Slam till date.
