KATHMANDU: Unified CPN-Maoist vice-chairman Narayan Kaji Shrestha ‘Prakash’ today claimed that there was no agreement to induct the Prime Minister as an ‘invitee’ to the High Level Political Mechanism. At a face-to-face organised at Reporters Club Nepal here, Prakash said, “Two agreements were made in the HLPM — the members of the mechanism could invite their respective party’s leaders during a meeting if necessary and the HLPM itself can invite leaders of political parties for discussion.” He, however, made it clear that the mechanism was formed not to run the government. Other members would be inducted through consensus, he added. He, however, claimed the mechanism could discuss formation of national government on consensus. “Toppling the coalition is not the objective of the mechanism,” he said, adding, “Its major objectives are to end the protracted political deadlock, lead the peace process to a logical conclusion and timely drafting of the new constitution.” He reiterated that the scheduled indefinite strike called by his party would continue from January 24. But it could be called off if certain agreements are made by the HLPM. Commenting on the 1950 Peace and Friendship Treaty with India, he said the Maoists wanted to nullify it and not review it. However, a treaty with India was pertinent, he added. He said his party would raise various issues with visiting Indian External Affairs Minister SM Krishna. Meanwhile, he claimed that they wanted good relationship with India on the basis of equality. The movement for national independence was a need as India neglected the diplomatic initiations of his party. Shrestha further said the Maoists would not compromise with India to gain power and would resolve all the political issues through talks with the local political parties. Answering a query raised by reporters related to arms brought by the Nepali Army from India, recently, he said that his party was investigating the matter.
