Singh, Hussain set new marks at Worlds

KATHMANDU, JULY 24

Olympian swimmer Gaurika Singh and Nasir Yahya Hussain set new national records in the 20th World Aquatics Championships in Fukuoka, Japan today.

Singh broke her own record in women's 100m backstroke event, while Hussain set the new national mark in 200m freestyle event for his second national record in two days. Hussain had broke the national record in 400m freestyle event on Sunday.

The 13th South Asian Games four gold medal winner, Singh complete the 100m backstroke event in one minute and 6.80 seconds on her way to breaking her own mark of 1:07.31.

The youngest athlete of the 2016 Rio Olympic Games, Singh had set the previous record during the 12th South Asian Games in Guwahati in 2016 where she had won historic silver and three bronze medals.

Hussain, meanwhile, broke second national record. He completed the 200m freestyle event in one minute and 57.26 seconds, emulating his own mark of 1:58.23 set during the 11th NSA Cup last month at the International Sports Complex last month in Lalitpur.

On Sunday, the 17-year-old Hussain completed the 400m freestyle event in four minutes and 8.23 seconds to break his own mark of 4:12.17 set during the 11th NSA Cup.

Another Nepali swimmer, Duana Lama will compete in the 200m freestyle on Tuesday.
