Two arrested for fraud in foreign employment scam

KATHMANDU, JANUARY 29

Police have arrested two individuals on charges of fraudulently collecting money by falsely promising to send people to America and Canada for foreign employment.

The arrested individuals have been identified as 25-year-old Bhuvan Karki, originally from Kanchanpur, Shuklaphanta Municipality-1, and currently residing in Tokha Municipality-6, Kathmandu; and 42-year-old Nitesh Pokharel, a resident of Kageshwori Manohara Municipality-3, Kathmandu.

According to the police, Bhuvan allegedly collected Rs 1 crore from three victims by promising to send them to America, while Nitesh is accused of taking Rs 12 lakh from four victims with assurances of sending them to Canada. After receiving the money, both individuals reportedly went out of contact, prompting the victims to file complaints.

The Kathmandu Valley Crime Investigation Office, Teku, initiated an investigation based on the complaints. Bhuvan was arrested from Kathmandu Metropolitan City-12 on Monday, while Nitesh was apprehended from Kageshwori Manohara Municipality-3 on Tuesday.

Following their arrest, Bhuvan has been sent to the District Police Office, Kathmandu, for further investigation and necessary action. Nitesh has been handed over to the Department of Foreign Employment, Tahachal, Kathmandu, for further proceedings.

As such scams have been on the rise in recent days, authorities have been urging the public to remain vigilant and verify the credentials of individuals or agencies offering foreign employment opportunities to avoid falling victim to such scams.
