KATHMANDU, SEPTEMBER 12

Former Chief Justice Sushila Karki was sworn in today as Nepal's interim prime minister at a special ceremony at Sheetal Niwas.

President Ram Chandra Paudel administered the oath in the presence of the vice president, chief justice, senior government officials, security chiefs, and members of the diplomatic community.

President Paudel appointed Karki by exercising constitutional powers vested in the head of state to uphold the Constitution and promote national unity. Acting on the prime minister's recommendation, he mandated the interim government to conduct new parliamentary elections within six months.

Karki's appointment follows the recent Gen-Z–led protests that pressed for the dissolution of the House of Representatives and the formation of a non-partisan administration.

Although a three-member cabinet was proposed along with a plan for their oath-taking, no agreement has been reached on the ministerial nominees. As a result, Prime Minister Karki will temporarily oversee all portfolios.

Her appointment also marks a milestone as she becomes Nepal's first woman to hold the post of prime minister.
