KATHMANDU, SEPTEMBER 16
The mass escape of inmates from Chitwan Prison has posed a serious setback to Nepal's rhino conservation efforts, with dozens of convicted poachers still at large.
Prison officials said that of the 744 inmates who fled during the September 10 jailbreak, 409 have returned so far.
Among them are 26 of the 48 prisoners convicted in one-horned rhino poaching cases.
At least 60 escapees remain out of contact despite repeated attempts to reach them, according to prison officials.
Chitwan National Park has responded with heightened patrols and strict monitoring, viewing the escape of rhino-related offenders as a significant security challenge.
According to the Park information Office, a detailed list of the fugitives has been circulated to strengthen surveillance in and around the protected area.
Authorities continue to urge the remaining escapees to surrender, warning that the jailbreak threatens years of progress in Nepal's successful fight against rhino poaching.
