KATHMANDU, SEPTEMBER 11
The Um Hong-gil Human Foundation (UHF), a South Korean NGO working in education and healthcare in Nepal, has announced a wider relief programme for people affected by the August 26 floods.
The foundation will distribute emergency medicines and provide patient tents at the Uttar Gaya Health Post on Saturday in cooperation with Nepal Kathmandu Model Hospital.
It also plans to provide tents, school supplies and daily necessities at three or more additional locations, based on field assessments conducted by its Nepal office in coordination with local authorities and relevant agencies.
The foundation is reviewing a proposal to construct a combined classroom and shelter facility at a school site destroyed by the floods. It has also announced special scholarships for students at its foundation-supported Human School who lost family members in the disaster.
UHF headquarters transferred its first tranche of relief funds to Nepal on September 3, with further funding planned in the coming weeks. The foundation has been conducting an emergency fundraising campaign since late August.
UHF Chairman Um Hong-gil said the foundation would continue supporting Nepali families who lost homes and loved ones in the disaster.
The foundation initially focused on search and rescue assistance following the floods, which also left nine South Korean workers missing. It has now shifted towards longer-term relief and recovery support.
Um had mobilised $100,000 in emergency relief through the foundation following the 2015 earthquake and visited affected areas as head of a Korean Red Cross emergency relief team.
