KATHMANDU, OCTOBER 9
Prime Minister Sushila Karki has pledged to initiate political and administrative reforms to address issues such as corruption, unemployment, and discrimination, while calling for unity in times of crisis.
In a video message released on the occasion of one month since the Gen Z movement began, PM Karki said, 'We have introduced special programs to support the families of those affected by the Gen Z protests on September 8 and 9, and for the treatment of the injured. Additional mechanisms are being developed for their welfare.'
She stressed the need to embrace the spirit of the youth-led political movement, saying that their sacrifices stem from a desire for justice, rule of law, and the end of corruption and misgovernance. 'The revolution initiated by our youth must be recognized by all,' she said.
Acknowledging past governments' failure to listen to young voices, Karki urged humility in accepting mistakes and emphasized respect for the passion and patriotism of Nepal's youth. She reaffirmed her commitment to the changes demanded by young people and highlighted the government's ongoing efforts to meet those aspirations even beyond the upcoming elections.
'Gen Z's concerns should awaken all youth, while political parties must also reform themselves,' she remarked.
The Prime Minister further announced plans to establish new mechanisms to meaningfully engage youth in building the future of Nepal, appealing for calm and the cessation of violence.
'Turning painful incidents into the foundation of a new Nepal requires mutual goodwill and national unity,' Karki said, adding, 'Both the current and future governments will take concrete steps to fulfill the dreams of our youth and build a prosperous Nepal.'
Reiterating the need for solidarity during challenging times, she concluded, 'We will do everything possible to honor the sacrifices of our martyrs. I believe that in this moment of crisis, we will move forward together as one.'
