The air and streets of Kathmandu carry an unsettling calm yet beneath lies a question- is it really the calm after the storm or a prelude to another catastrophe we are hesitating to confront.
On September 8, 2025 we witnessed the revolutionary Gen Z's protest against never ending corruption, lack of governmental accountability and the uncertain future. Young people who chose to remain in the country often feel betrayed. Each and every person stood together strong under a single identity-that of a Nepali citizen. Chants of frustration echoed through the streets- a scene that felt almost unreal.
The purpose was unambiguous with no intent to harm property or endanger lives.
Yet the crowd was hardly aware of some unimaginable. The movement that started in a resolute yet peaceful manner, gradually spiralled out of control disrupted by mobs. In moments, tear gas engulfed the crowd, leaving eyes burning and lungs struggling for breath. Mobs breached the parliament building causing significant damage to the structure. Eventually, police opened fire resulting into the death of many including school children. This was only the precursor to the greater tragedy that was yet to follow.
The aftermath brought devastation the country has never witnessed before. The image of the kids in their school uniform believing them to be their armour- shot mercilessly left the nation shaken. Violence spread nationwide targeting corrupt politician's properties. Fear and uncertainty gripped the entire population. Worse, opportunists exploited the chaos. The epitome of our culture and art- business houses and public buildings having historic values were left burning in flames. Still, hope arose when Ms. Sushila Karki as the former the Chief Justice was appointed the interim prime minister.
While it is absolutely natural and necessary not to hold on tight to any tragedy, the pace at which the society seemed to move past the issue was perhapstoo fast. It felt as though everything was simply a nightmare from which we suddenly awoke, unanswered questions still remain and unresolved issue still persist. The families still seek justice while the survivors are enduring everlasting wounds. And the most important question of all-where is our bureaucratic system headed? With the country running under an interim government and the elections coming up in the next few months, the sacrifices of hundreds must not go in vain only to revert old patterns.
Be it in subtle or significant ways, considering the toll on both physical and mental health, it is important to navigate life in ways that provide stability and comfort. Yet, the Gen Z protest have not been fully realized. It could involve aligning personal life with civic duties- by using our expertise to raise voices, assisting others and staying vigilant in all situations. Ultimately, the vision hasalways been of a peaceful Nepal, shaped by its own people.
