KATHMANDU, FEBRUARY 5 The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has urged all concerned bodies to ensure that the upcoming House of Representatives (HoR) election is conducted in a human rights–friendly manner by fully adhering to the election code of conduct. The election is scheduled to take place on March 5. Stating that it has been monitoring the human rights situation in the run-up to the polls, the NHRC called on all stakeholders to make the election respectful of human rights. During a discussion held on Thursday with chiefs and representatives of various organisations involved in election monitoring, the Commission emphasized the need to enhance the effectiveness of monitoring and observation mechanisms, according to NHRC Spokesperson Dr. Tikaram Pokharel. The Commission stressed that citizens' right to vote confidentially must not be violated. Recording audio or video footage during voting and uploading it to social media platforms constitutes a breach of voters' privacy, the NHRC stated. It further noted that producing or disseminating content that undermines the dignity of others amounts to a serious violation and must be strictly monitored. The human rights body also expressed concern over reports that some candidates and the offices of certain political parties have violated the election code of conduct.
