NHRC urges conducive atmosphere for free, fair elections

KATHMANDU, FEBRUARY 26 Chairperson of the National Human Rights Commission, Tap Bahadur Magar, has called on all stakeholders to ensure the upcoming elections are clean, free, fair and fear-free. Speaking at an interaction programme organised by the Citizen Campaign for Fair Election, he underscored the role of the government, political parties, civil society, security agencies and the media in creating an enabling environment for credible polls. He stressed that voters must be allowed to choose capable representatives impartially without being misled. Acting Inspector General of Nepal Police, Dambar Bahadur BK, said security preparations for the first phase of the elections have been completed and morale among security personnel remains high. Additional Inspector General of the Armed Police Force, Ganesh Thada Magar, said integrated security plans are in place with security cells established at central, provincial and district levels. A representative of the Election Commission Nepal urged political parties and candidates to strictly comply with the election code of conduct and called for a legal framework to penalise baseless allegations against candidates.
