Monsoon rains to persist in hills as heatwave grips western tarai

KATHMANDU, JUNE 17 Light to moderate rainfall accompanied by thunder and lightning is likely in several hilly and Himalayan districts today, while hot weather conditions are expected to continue in parts of the western Tarai, according to the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology (DHM). The department said generally cloudy conditions will prevail over the hilly and Himalayan regions of the country, with partly cloudy weather in Madhesh Province and the Tarai areas of Koshi, Bagmati and Gandaki provinces. The Tarai regions of Lumbini and Sudurpashchim provinces are likely to remain mainly fair. Moderate rain and thundershowers are forecast at a few places in the hilly and Himalayan regions of Koshi, Bagmati and Gandaki provinces and at isolated locations in Lumbini, Karnali and Sudurpashchim provinces. Parts of the Koshi Tarai and isolated areas of Madhesh Province may also witness rain and thunderstorms. The DHM has warned that hot day conditions are likely in some areas of the Tarai in Lumbini and Sudurpashchim provinces. Temperatures are expected to soar to 38-40 degrees Celsius in Dhangadi and Nepalgunj, while Bhairahawa could record up to 38 degrees Celsius. Meanwhile, rain activity is expected to continue tonight, particularly in the hilly and Himalayan regions of Koshi, Gandaki and Bagmati provinces. Kathmandu is likely to receive light rain with thunderstorms, with temperatures ranging between 29 and 31 degrees Celsius during the day and 19 to 21 degrees Celsius at night. The weather system is currently under the partial influence of an upper-level western low-pressure trough, coupled with local and easterly winds, the department said.
