BIRGUNJ, JULY 3 Authorities have stepped up their campaign to clear road encroachments in Birgunj, redeploying bulldozers in the Gandak area to remove structures built within the road right-of-way. The Road Division Office, Hetauda, resumed the demolition drive on Friday after many property owners failed to clear partially demolished buildings and construction materials despite earlier notices. According to Engineer Durga Prasad of the Road Division Office, houses, sheds and other structures built within the designated road boundary had been demolished in an earlier phase of the operation. Owners were subsequently instructed to remove debris and vacate the encroached area voluntarily. 'Since many structures have not been fully cleared, the department has resumed the demolition and cleanup campaign to restore the road corridor,' he said. Officials said priority is being given to removing buildings whose electricity connections have already been disconnected, allowing demolition work to proceed without interruption. The anti-encroachment campaign is being carried out under a Supreme Court directive to widen Birgunj's main roads by maintaining a 25-metre setback on both sides of the roadway. The Road Division Office said the renewed operation in the Gandak area is aimed at ensuring effective implementation of the court-ordered road expansion project. The department has urged all property owners whose structures fall within the road boundary to vacate the area voluntarily. It warned that encroachments would otherwise be removed in accordance with prevailing laws.
