KATHMANDU, JULY 5 The monsoon is expected to intensify across much of Nepal on Sunday, with the Meteorological Forecasting Division warning of heavy rainfall, thunderstorms and strong winds in several provinces. According to the Division, the monsoon remains active nationwide, with the monsoon trough lying south of its normal position over eastern Nepal and near its average location in the western region. Heavy rainfall is likely at one or two places in the hilly and Terai districts of Gandaki, Lumbini and Sudurpashchim provinces, as well as the hilly region of Koshi Province, raising the risk of flash floods, landslides and inundation in vulnerable areas. Light to moderate rain accompanied by thunder and lightning is forecast for many parts of the country's hills and Himalayan region, while scattered showers are also expected across the Terai. Gusty winds are likely in parts of Madhesh Province and the Terai districts of Koshi Province. The weather pattern is expected to persist into Sunday night, with Koshi, Lumbini, Karnali and Sudurpashchim provinces remaining generally cloudy. Heavy rain is again forecast for parts of Gandaki, Sudurpashchim and the hilly districts of Koshi. Among major cities, Kathmandu and Pokhara are expected to receive moderate rainfall with thunderstorms, while Dhangadhi, Biratnagar, Dharan, Dhankuta and Dadeldhura are also forecast to experience moderate rain. Nepalgunj, Janakpur, Simara and Bhairahawa are likely to witness light rain with thunderstorms during the day. The Department has advised the public, particularly those living in flood- and landslide-prone areas, to remain alert as the active monsoon system continues to affect weather conditions across the country.
