BAJURA, JULY 14
The Bajura District Court has ordered 10 people accused in the Lampata violence of Himali Rural Municipality-3 to be remanded in judicial custody pending trial. Eight others were released on bail of Rs 200,000 each, while three were freed on general date.
The order, issued late Monday, follows the arrest of 21 people in connection with the May 17 incident, in which a group from neighbouring Humla allegedly assaulted local residents and representatives and held them captive.
According to the District Police Office, Bajura, the accused have been charged with unlawful confinement. The court ordered detention under Section 67 of the National Criminal Procedure Code. Bail was granted under Sections 68 and 72 after considering financial conditions, while general date release was ordered under Section 69.
One suspect remains absconding.
The violence erupted after a group from Humla opposed the construction of a temporary police post in Lampata. The Sudurpashchim Provincial Government had allocated Rs 4 million for the facility. Police said the group attempted to halt construction and allegedly assaulted residents, elected representatives, and security personnel.
Among those injured were Ward No. 3 member Pema Gora Gurung, his wife Laxmi Gurung, Minu Kunwar, Nar Bahadur Gurung, Assistant Head Constable Mahesh Dhami, and Chief Administrative Officer Kul Bahadur Thapa. Four seriously injured victims were airlifted to Kathmandu for treatment and have since returned home.

Police also linked the accused to another incident on May 19, when a team visiting Ranisain to promote tourism, including Himali Rural Municipality Chair Govinda Malla and Dhangadhi Sub-metropolitan City Mayor Gopal Hamal, was allegedly assaulted.

Following the violence, the government established temporary Nepal Police and Armed Police Force camps in Lampata. Two investigation committees were formed: one led by SSP Bimal Raj Kandel to probe the incident, and another headed by Survey Department Deputy Director General Sushil Dangol to examine the Bajura-Humla boundary dispute. Both committees have completed field studies, but reports are yet to be made public.
