Racial backlash fear in S Africa

VENTERSDORP:South African authorities today dispatched senior officials to visit the home of slain far-right leader Eugene Terre’Blanche as they sought to ease racial tensions. A delegation led by the provincial head of North West province met the Terre’Blanche family, after President Jacob Zuma strongly condemned his murder. “The premier of the North West province is visiting the Terre’Blanche family this morning,” said Kgotso Khumalo, a spokesman for the premier, without giving the details of the meeting. The 69-year-old leader of the extremist Afrikaner Weerstandsbeweging (AWB, Afrikaner Resistance Movement) was brutally killed by black workers on his farm on Saturday evening, sparking fears of renewed race tensions. Zuma on Sunday called for politicians not to inflame race tensions after the killing of the fiery leader. “It is our responsibility to denounce the crime and stay away from statements that might reverse nation building and racial cohesion,” Zuma said on public television. The AWB has vowed to avenge the killing, saying it would meet on May 1 to plan the way forward. But the group urged its members to remain calm and not take immediate action.
