Fires continue as death toll rises

KAPILVASTU/SIRAHA: Three persons were killed and 30 injured in a fire that also gutted 150 houses and sheds of 70 families in Ganeshpur-7, Gedawajod, in Kapilvastu this morning. According to Rajendra Shrestha, inspector in the Area Police Office, Ganeshpur, Jagadev Kurmi (60), Sagi Kurmi (40) and Ayodhya Kurmi (50) were burnt to death. Police and APF personnel and local residents managed to douse the flames. Chief District Officer Laxman Kumar Thapa said the district administration will provide relief to the victims after a detailed report on the fire is had. Victims have been taking shelter in a field nearby, while a team of police personnel and administration office staffers has started collecting data of the loss. In Aurahi-6, Siraha, two persons were injured in a fire that gutted 24 houses and sheds. According to Siraha District Superintendent of Police Sanubabu Thapaliya, property worth Rs 30 lakh was destroyed in the fire. He said the fire was brought under control after two hours of hardwork by personnel of Nepal Police, the APF and Nepal Army and locals. Meanwhile, six-year-old Upa Kumari, who was injured in the fire in Aurahi-6 yesterday, died today undergoing treatment in the BP Koirala Institute of Health Sciences, Dharan. Kumari’s 10-year-old brother Hariom is in a critical condition in the hospital. The Red Cross Society, Siraha branch, has distributed rice, beaten rice and tents to fire victims in Aurahi. A local social worker Bhagirath Agrawal also distributed clothes worth Rs 2,000 for each family. In Panchthar, four houses were destroyed when a brush fire spread in the village in Panchami-3. According to Deu Kumar Yonghang, a local, the fire is spreading and posing a threat to a dozen other houses. A team of police personnel has been sent to the area to take stock, police said. In Terhathum, forest fires have spread in Panitar and Silgadhi community forests in Chuhandanda-1 and Kalegaira community forest in Iwa VDC. According to Hem Prasad Bastola, chairman of the Panitar Community Forest Consumers’ Committee, trees and herbs in the forests have been destroyed while animals have died in the fire. Meanwhile, five houses were gutted in a fire in Kandbari municipality-5, Sekaha in Sankhuwasabha, this evening. According to Shekhar Koirala, DSP, property worth Rs 70 lakh was destroyed in the fire. In Rautahat, 16 houses in a Muslim village of Malhiniya Tole in Rajpur Tulsi VDC were destroyed in a fire this afternoon. Four houses were also destroyed in a fire in Bharouliya of Swathi VDC in Nawalparasi. According to the police, the fire spread from the house of one Mantri Thakur. In Byas municipality-11, Tanahun, a house of Bakhat Narayan Shrestha was destroyed in a fire that broke out last night.
