Ginger farming on rise

Some ten Village Development Committees in the southern part of the district are reported to have been excelling in commercial farming of good quality ginger.
According to the DAO Office, commercial farming of ginger is being carried out by farmers in Ranibas, Homtang, Khairang, Sindrang, Patelpani, Devantar, Hasanpur, Pancha, Dhungmana, Pawala VDCs.
'I have been growing ginger for commercial purpose for the past three years. The technical assistance and encouragement provided by the agriculture development office has been important to this end', says farmer Ram Bahadur Rai. A resident of Pancha VDC, Rai grows ginger on 30 ropani of land with an annual income of around Rs 50,000. Maya Rai of Ranibas VDC-8 whose annual production is around 20 to 25 tonnes of ginger says she is very happy to have taken to commercial ginger production. Maya, who would have otherwise merely stayed at home, is presently running a family of five as a result of ginger farming.
According to the ADO, the annual production of ginger in Bhojpur is around 19,080 metric tonnes.
