Lifters shatter records in Thailan

Kathmandu, September 11 Nepali lifters Tara Devi Pun, Gagan Oli and Pukar Gurung set new national records in the Asian Weightlifting Championship in Phuket, Thailand on Friday. Competing in above-75kg weight category, Pun lifted 71kg in snatch and 95kg in clean and jerk for a total of 166kg on her way to bettering her own marks in all three sections. Her previous best was 68kg in snatch, 94kg in clean and jerk and 162kg in total set during the fourth Weightlifting Grand Prix. Likewise, Oli lifted 113kg in snatch to break Madan Shiva Bhakta’s record of 112kg set during eighth SAF Games held in Kathmandu in 1999. Oli lifted 137kg in clean and jerk for a total of 250kg in the 105kg weight category. Also, Gurung lifted 123kg in snatch in the above-105kg section to break the previous record of 122kg held by Gopal Bahadur Shrestha since the ninth SAF Games in Islamabad in 2003. Gurung lifted 142kg in clean and jerk for a total lift of 265kg. On Thursday, Dinesh Shrestha had broken the record in 94kg weight category.
