Sihine wins 10,000m

PRAGUE: Sileshi Sihine of Ethiopia won the 10,000 metres at the Josef Odlozil Memorial Grand Prix II meet, but was nearly half of a minute slower than the season’s best time. Sihine finished first in 26 minutes, 57.27 seconds, well off Kenenisa Bekele’s time of 26:28.72 set on May 29 in Netherlands. Sihine, who beat fellow Ethiopian Eshetu Gezahegne, had set Bekele’s year old world record of 26:20.31 as his target. — AP

France clinch 8 golds

ALMERIA: France stacked up eight gold medals in swimming and shooting at the Mediterranean Games. Sebastien Rouault won the men’s 1,500-metre freestyle in 15:08.98. Solenne Figues won 200m freestyle, and went on to help France win the women’s 800m in 8:06.37. Alexandra Putra won in women’s 100m backstroke and teammate Frederick Bousquet won men’s 50m butterfly. In shooting, Valerian Sauveplane (50m rifle prone), Nathalie Robin (50m rifle 3 position) and Brigitte Roy (10m air pistol) won gold medals. — AP
