MMC clinch Hetauda Gold Cup

Hetauda, February 20 Laxmi Hyundai Manang Marshyangdi Club (MMC) lifted the title of the International Invitational Hetauda Gold Cup Football Tournament here on Saturday. In the match played at the Forestry College grounds, MMC beat Tribhuvan Army Club 4-1 in tie breaker after both teams failed to score in regulation and extra time. Skipper Anil Gurung, Sujal Shrestha, Cisco and Mousa converted their spot kicks for MMC. Jitendra Karki was the lone scorer for Armymen, while Hiranya Magar and Santosh Tamang failed to convert their shots. TAC were bolstered with the presence of SA Games stars Nawayug Shrestha and Bikesh Kuthu, while MMC had Biraj Maharjan, Bishal Rai and Bikram Lama in the squad. With the win, MMC earned Rs 300,000, while TAC received Rs 150,000. Olawale Afeez was named the player of the tournament and bagged Rs 3,000, while TAC goalkeeper Kuthu received the player of the final award. Jitenndra Karki and Tanka Basnet of TAC were named the best defender and midfielder respectively, while Anil Gurung, Kiran Chemjong and Tshring Lopsang of MMC were adjudged the best striker, goalkeeper and coach respectively. The individual award winners received Rs 10,000 each. MMC coach Lopsang was happy with the title. “Boys worked hard in the final and the match went to spot kick battle because of tough opponents,” he said. Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Women and Children CP Mainali handed over the prizes and trophies to the winners and runners-up. A total of eight teams — Bhutan Clearing, Kanchenjunga FC of India, Regal Hetauda Resort FC, Tribhuvan Army Club, Saraswoti Youth Club, Nepal APF Club, Manang Marshyangdi Club and Sahara Club — participated in the tournament. The tournament was organised by Suman Bhomjan Memorial Sports Foundation in memory of sports journalist Suman Bhomjan, who was killed in the devastating April 25 earthquake last year that took more than 8,500 lives.
