Kathmandu, March 29 Nepali Congress leader and former finance minister Ram Sharan Mahat today said the understanding to have transit treaty and free trade area between Nepal and China were major achievements of Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli’s recent visit to the northern neighbour. “These understandings and agreement are positive achievements for Nepal,” Mahat, who is also a former finance minister, said at a talk programme in the Valley. “Now, we need to focus on implementation.” PM Oli had returned from a week-long visit to China on Sunday. Ruling CPN-UML leader and former finance minister Bharat Mohan Adhikari also hailed the 10-point Nepal-China agreement and 15-point joint communiqué issued during the PM’s visit. “With these agreements, Sino-Nepal relations have reached to a new height,” Adhikari said in the function organised by the Development Institute. “If implemented sincerely, it would open a door for Nepal’s economic development and prosperity.” Saying that relations with India have improved significantly since the end of the blockade in February, Adhikari, however, stated that misunderstandings with the southern neighbour are yet to be resolved fully. Meanwhile, Finance Minister Bishnu Paudel stated that the country’s relations with India and China have their own importance and they should not be compared. Former foreign minister and ambassador to India Bhekh Bahadur Thapa said PM Oli’s recent visits to China and India in February have helped strengthen relations with the two neighbours. Former ambassador to China Tanka Karki said that the transit agreement with China would provide an option for Nepal to have access to the sea, other-than via India.
